Our work on the house continues to move along at a breakneck pace.
Its been a cleansing experience to see our house starting to take its new shape.
We needed to remove the half wall because it will impede on our new kitchen design if not taken out.
After removing the wall we found wiring that made us look on in horror as we realized that almost all of the kitchen AND the full basement electricity are on one breaker switch.
Dom lightened the load by removing some of the upper lighting and outlets that will not be used, but it was kind of unnerving to see.
One of the best things about living in an older home and rehabbing it is that you have the opportunity to fix any mistakes made by previous owners.
As we continue to “undress” the house, I find that I fall more in love with our home each day. Here is a before and after photo of the half wall:
Dom and I took down the last of the kitchen cabinets which was no easy task!
Noah and I removed the first portion of cabinets the other day, and yesterday the rest of them came down.
Over the peninsula was a strip of cabinets that we knew would be a challenge to remove, but Dom and I did it.
Taking those particular cabinets down was about as scary as when we moved in and needed to take our piano off the truck!
Here are some before and after photos of our kitchen cabinets:
It looks a little strange not having upper cabinets, but there is a method to my madness. The upper cabinets served no real purpose since they were inefficient and very difficult to reach.
The projects ahead for the kitchen before we actually gut it will be to fix the ceiling, clean and prime the walls, take out the baseboard heating by the window, close off the window and make a wall (this will add about four feet of usable space to the kitchen), call an electrician to work on our electrical panel and do a sketch up of our new kitchen layout.
I’m thinking of making our new kitchen white with base drawer cabinets by Ikea, a seven foot free standing island, soapstone countertops, glass tile backsplash, stainless steel wall shelves, and possibly a very dark bamboo flooring that will cover the kitchen, foyer and family room.
Right now we have our table and chairs in the family room, but soon enough the rooms will be switched.
Today Dom is off from work, so the rest of the paneling is coming down, we’ll be repairing the ceilings in different places, mud and taping walls and getting the top of the walls ready for me to cut in the ceiling paint tomorrow.
Here’s a short video of Noah and I removing the first of the cabinets:
